How to use your mala for Meditation & Intention Setting
A mala is more than just a string of beads; it’s a powerful tool to help focus your intentions and deepen your practice of self-love. Here’s how you can use your mala in your daily routine:
What is a Mala?
A mala is a string of beads often used in meditation and prayer. Traditionally, Malas have 108 beads, plus one additional bead called the guru bead. Some Malas also feature a tassel, which has a symbolic meaning.
The Significance of 108 Beads
108 is considered sacred in many spiritual traditions, especially in Hinduism and Buddhism. Here are a few reasons why:
Mathematical Significance
The number 108 is a natural division of the circle (since 108 is a product of the powers of 1, 2, and 3).
Astronomical Significance
The distance between the Earth and the Sun is about 108 times the diameter of the Sun. Similarly, the distance between the Earth and the Moon is about 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
Spiritual Significance
There are said to be 108 energy lines (Nadis) converging to form the heart chakra. Reciting a mantra 108 times is believed to bring spiritual completion and fulfillment.
The Guru Bead and Tassel
Guru Bead
The larger bead, often called the guru bead, represents the teacher or spiritual guide. It serves as a reminder of your connection to the divine and to your spiritual teachers.
Tassel
The tassel represents a connection to the spirit or your highest self. It also symbolizes enlightenment, as the strands of the tassel come together at one point, much like our consciousness uniting with the divine.
Setting Your Intention
Before you begin using your mala, set a clear intention. This could be a specific affirmation related to self-love, such as “I am worthy of love” or “I embrace myself fully.” Holding this intention in your mind will guide your practice.
Creating Your Sacred Space
Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you can sit undisturbed. This could be a dedicated meditation area, a cozy corner of your home, or even outside in nature.
Centering Yourself
Sit comfortably with your spine straight. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Focus on calming your mind and body, letting go of any tension or distractions.
Holding Your Mala
Positioning
Hold your mala in your right hand. Drape it between your middle and index fingers. The mala should hang over your fingers, with the beads resting in the palm of your hand.
Starting Point
Begin at the bead next to the guru bead. The guru bead should be at the center, hanging down.
Reciting Your Mantra
Choosing a Mantra
Select a mantra or affirmation that resonates with your intention of self-love. Examples include “I am love” or “I am enough.”
Counting Beads
Using your thumb, count each bead as you recite your chosen mantra or affirmation. Move to the next bead by pulling it towards you with your thumb. This motion is often referred to as “milking” the beads.
Completing a Cycle
Continue this process, bead by bead, until you reach the guru bead again. When you reach the guru bead, take a moment to reflect on your practice and feel the energy of your intention.
Reflecting on the Guru Bead
When you reach the guru bead, pause for a moment. Reflect on the energy and intention of your practice. Do not cross over the guru bead; if you wish to continue, reverse direction and go back the other way.
Closing Your Practice
After completing your meditation, sit quietly for a few moments. Reflect on your experience and the intentions you’ve set. Take a few deep breaths and slowly open your eyes when you’re ready.
Integrating Self-Love into Your Day
Carry the energy of your practice with you throughout your day. Whenever you need a reminder of your intention, hold your mala or recite your mantra silently.
